The Cuatro Project

The Puerto Rican Cuatro Project (“the Cuatro Project”) was developed by a handful of professionals of Puerto Rican descent who sensed an urgency to preserve Puerto Rico’s autochthonous musical and cultural traditions.

A critically acclaimed initiative, the Cuatro Project promotes the history and traditions of Puerto Rico's rich musical history, its stringed instruments and
its players. The Cuatro Project also preserves and fosters the ancient form
of décima (a poetry-like verse), as well as its varied song forms.

The many accomplishments of the Cuatro Project include the first ever
feature documentary film about the Cuatro (Puerto Rico’s national
instrument) and “jíbaro” music. The first ever documentary film about the decimal, as well as the first ever music CD dedicated expressly to the
decimal entitled La Decima de Espinel.

The Cuatro Project has also published numerous articles on traditional
Puerto Rican music and participated in many educational workshops and initiatives with the aim of preserving the rich history of Puerto Rico’s
                                     musical heritage.

Finally, the Cuatro Project has developed an
unprecedented, interactive web site that contains
extensive collections of biographies, oral histories,
                                     pictures, sound clips, educational components
                                     and other related items:  www.cuatro-pr.org
